Narrative:
We were in level flight at 5000 ft; speed assigned 230 KTS; being vectored for the ILS runway 11. We received an epgws warning of 'terrain; terrain; pull up; pull up.' I took control of the aircraft and executed the CFIT maneuver. The warning stopped passing through 5500 ft. I advised ATC that we were climbing in response to a terrain warning and leveled at 6000 ft. The controller replied casually 'yea; that's mt diablo' and gave us a descent to 5000 ft. After the event the first officer told me he saw the RA indicator 2300 ft and decreasing. I don't know what the lowest RA indicated.

Narrative: WE WERE IN LEVEL FLT AT 5000 FT; SPD ASSIGNED 230 KTS; BEING VECTORED FOR THE ILS RWY 11. WE RECEIVED AN EPGWS WARNING OF 'TERRAIN; TERRAIN; PULL UP; PULL UP.' I TOOK CTL OF THE ACFT AND EXECUTED THE CFIT MANEUVER. THE WARNING STOPPED PASSING THROUGH 5500 FT. I ADVISED ATC THAT WE WERE CLBING IN RESPONSE TO A TERRAIN WARNING AND LEVELED AT 6000 FT. THE CTLR REPLIED CASUALLY 'YEA; THAT'S MT DIABLO' AND GAVE US A DSCNT TO 5000 FT. AFTER THE EVENT THE FO TOLD ME HE SAW THE RA INDICATOR 2300 FT AND DECREASING. I DON'T KNOW WHAT THE LOWEST RA INDICATED.
