Narrative:

On taxi out to departure runway were supposed to turn left and make our way to the end of runway 24L in cyul; I missed the turn on the taxiway and taxied over the hold short line of runway 24L. I noticed it right away and immediately stopped the aircraft but we were 1/2 way over the short line. ATC told us to continue down the runway; exit at the next taxiway and we proceeded with flight with no further incident. Additionally it was nighttime and very dark and there was no illuminated sign for runway 24L/6R which it should be illuminated at night. Also there were no 'hold short lights' installed to prevent this occurrence in a very confusing part of the airport. Also no blinking orange hold short lights for that runway. Basically the only thing that let me know I was over the hold short line was the taxi light on the aircraft. This was a full day of flying; both of us fatigued. No illuminated runway sign at night; no illuminated hold short lights of any kind; and at a very confusing area at the airport it is easy to miss your correct turn. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter stated that this was the last flight of a long duty day. The taxi instructions were to taxi east (on the south ramp); taxiway A4 to a to runway 24L. Taxiing at night; the flight missed the left turn at taxiway a which resulted in the runway incursion. Reporter stated that on the evening of the report; the red runway 6R/24L sign was not illuminated. He stated that the taxi light on this aircraft was dim; and the deviation was recognized when they crossed the hold short line. No traffic conflict resulted. The reporter has flown into cyul since this event; and the runway sign was illuminated on that occasion. He believes that imbedded stop bars would be helpful because the A4 taxiway can easily be mistaken for an extension of the ramp.

Title: EMB 135 FLT CREW INADVERTENTLY CROSSED A HOLD SHORT LINE WHILE TAXIING FOR TKOF ON RWY 24L AT CYUL.

Narrative: ON TAXI OUT TO DEP RWY WERE SUPPOSED TO TURN L AND MAKE OUR WAY TO THE END OF RWY 24L IN CYUL; I MISSED THE TURN ON THE TXWY AND TAXIED OVER THE HOLD SHORT LINE OF RWY 24L. I NOTICED IT RIGHT AWAY AND IMMEDIATELY STOPPED THE ACFT BUT WE WERE 1/2 WAY OVER THE SHORT LINE. ATC TOLD US TO CONTINUE DOWN THE RWY; EXIT AT THE NEXT TXWY AND WE PROCEEDED WITH FLT WITH NO FURTHER INCIDENT. ADDITIONALLY IT WAS NIGHTTIME AND VERY DARK AND THERE WAS NO ILLUMINATED SIGN FOR RWY 24L/6R WHICH IT SHOULD BE ILLUMINATED AT NIGHT. ALSO THERE WERE NO 'HOLD SHORT LIGHTS' INSTALLED TO PREVENT THIS OCCURRENCE IN A VERY CONFUSING PART OF THE ARPT. ALSO NO BLINKING ORANGE HOLD SHORT LIGHTS FOR THAT RWY. BASICALLY THE ONLY THING THAT LET ME KNOW I WAS OVER THE HOLD SHORT LINE WAS THE TAXI LIGHT ON THE ACFT. THIS WAS A FULL DAY OF FLYING; BOTH OF US FATIGUED. NO ILLUMINATED RWY SIGN AT NIGHT; NO ILLUMINATED HOLD SHORT LIGHTS OF ANY KIND; AND AT A VERY CONFUSING AREA AT THE ARPT IT IS EASY TO MISS YOUR CORRECT TURN. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: REPORTER STATED THAT THIS WAS THE LAST FLT OF A LONG DUTY DAY. THE TAXI INSTRUCTIONS WERE TO TAXI EAST (ON THE SOUTH RAMP); TXWY A4 TO A TO RWY 24L. TAXIING AT NIGHT; THE FLT MISSED THE LEFT TURN AT TXWY A WHICH RESULTED IN THE RWY INCURSION. REPORTER STATED THAT ON THE EVENING OF THE REPORT; THE RED RWY 6R/24L SIGN WAS NOT ILLUMINATED. HE STATED THAT THE TAXI LIGHT ON THIS ACFT WAS DIM; AND THE DEVIATION WAS RECOGNIZED WHEN THEY CROSSED THE HOLD SHORT LINE. NO TFC CONFLICT RESULTED. THE REPORTER HAS FLOWN INTO CYUL SINCE THIS EVENT; AND THE RWY SIGN WAS ILLUMINATED ON THAT OCCASION. HE BELIEVES THAT IMBEDDED STOP BARS WOULD BE HELPFUL BECAUSE THE A4 TXWY CAN EASILY BE MISTAKEN FOR AN EXTENSION OF THE RAMP.
