Narrative:
At about 800 ft afl after takeoff; we got the master caution light and the aft cargo light on the overhead panel. We retracted the gear flaps and limited airspeed to 200 KTS. We leveled off at 5000 ft and declared an emergency. After discussing the situation and referring to the QRH; we elected to return to ZZZZ. We called operations at ZZZZ to inform them and to call dispatch. I briefed the flight attendants and informed the passenger on downwind for the approach. I also specifically requested to the tower that after rollout I wanted the fire chief to inspect that cargo door and the airplane in general before taxiing to the gate. Upon touchdown; the aft cargo light went out. We cleared the runway and shut down the #2 engine. The fire chief found all cargo doors to be closed and locked and the airplane ok. We taxied back to the gate.
