Narrative:

Aborted a maximum power takeoff. At approximately 90 KTS; heard 4 loud bangs and loud thumping noises from the right side of aircraft. Stopped aircraft on the runway (midfield) and shut down right engine. Tower and other aircraft reported an orange flame coming out of right engine (rear) on takeoff roll (later confirmed by flight attendants on right side of aircraft). No fire indications/warnings at any time from engine instruments during or after the abort. Only abnormal instrument indication was the right engine egt temperature of 1051. Flight attendants reported some residual smoke coming from the rear or right engine after engine was shutdown but seemed to be dissipating. Requested arff to inspect right engine and exterior of aircraft. Arff reported no residual fire and followed aircraft back to assigned gate.
