Narrative:
Teb 5 departure; runway 24. Runway heading 1500 ft; then right turn 280 degrees; 1500 ft to 4.5 DME off teb; then climb 2000 ft. Upon departure from teb following noise abatement and departure procedures we had reached beyond 4.5 DME so we continued up to 2000 ft. The departure controller said/asked our altitude and we said 2000 ft. He said we should have been at 1500 ft but we were already beyond 4.5 at which point 2000 ft is the departure altitude. He promptly came back and told us to continue climb to 7000 or 8000 ft and gave us a heading for climb. Then we were handed off to another controller.
