Narrative:

After being delayed for approximately 2 hours for maintenance to complete a temporary repair on a trim panel on the upper right wing/engine pylon connection area; we departed for ZZZ1. Climbing through FL180; a flight attendant called the cockpit to report that a passenger sitting over the right wing area reported to her that the piece of trim that maintenance had been working on was sticking up and coming off the wing. The flight attendant visually verified that this piece was sticking up from the wing. After conferring with dispatch; a decision was made to return to ZZZ. No emergency was declared and the flight landed without incident.
