Narrative:
We pulled into the gate. I completed the parking checklist and removed the parking brake once I received a 'chocks in' signal. Moments later (20-30 seconds) the aircraft shook as though it was struck by something. I immediately reset the parking brake. The first officer got up and made a PA; using the flight attendant phone; asking people to remain seated. We investigated the problem and found that a belt loader struck the aircraft just aft of the left wing. There was damage to the flap and a hole in the side of the aircraft. Once the situation was under control the passenger were deplaned. I called maintenance and informed them of the situation. I then called a chief pilot to make sure we covered 'all our bases.' the passenger seemed to remain very calm and there were no injuries.
