Narrative:
Possible las ATC separation/protocol error. At approximately 400-500 ft AGL on stabilized visual approach (no instrument approach backup) to las runway 19L; the tower instructed us to go around; 'air carrier X go around.' somewhat stunned; and for a split second trying to analyze why and seeing nothing apparently wrong; I proceeded to go around making the appropriate callouts and flying the go around profile runway heading. As I pitched up I saw an air carrier B737 at my altitude having also gone around or taken off a runway 25. Noting that I was actually on a potential collision course; as I was beginning to make an evasive left turn for safety; the tower issued a left turn to a heading 170 degrees. Just as I reached the heading he wanted me back to runway heading. I was unaware of the specific operations on the 25 runways due to different tower frequencys; thus a bit surprised of the go around and other traffic. The tower did not give a reason for the go around and I felt the reason and procedure was a little odd as did some observers from another jet; referencing an air show kind of event; that I later learned.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN ACR ACFT ON LAS 19L SHORT FINAL WAS ISSUED AN ATC GAR AS ANOTHER ACR WAS DEPARTING RWY 25.
Narrative: POSSIBLE LAS ATC SEPARATION/PROTOCOL ERROR. AT APPROX 400-500 FT AGL ON STABILIZED VISUAL APCH (NO INST APCH BACKUP) TO LAS RWY 19L; THE TWR INSTRUCTED US TO GO AROUND; 'ACR X GO AROUND.' SOMEWHAT STUNNED; AND FOR A SPLIT SECOND TRYING TO ANALYZE WHY AND SEEING NOTHING APPARENTLY WRONG; I PROCEEDED TO GO AROUND MAKING THE APPROPRIATE CALLOUTS AND FLYING THE GAR PROFILE RWY HDG. AS I PITCHED UP I SAW AN ACR B737 AT MY ALT HAVING ALSO GONE AROUND OR TAKEN OFF A RWY 25. NOTING THAT I WAS ACTUALLY ON A POTENTIAL COLLISION COURSE; AS I WAS BEGINNING TO MAKE AN EVASIVE L TURN FOR SAFETY; THE TWR ISSUED A L TURN TO A HDG 170 DEGS. JUST AS I REACHED THE HDG HE WANTED ME BACK TO RWY HDG. I WAS UNAWARE OF THE SPECIFIC OPS ON THE 25 RWYS DUE TO DIFFERENT TWR FREQS; THUS A BIT SURPRISED OF THE GAR AND OTHER TFC. THE TWR DID NOT GIVE A REASON FOR THE GAR AND I FELT THE REASON AND PROC WAS A LITTLE ODD AS DID SOME OBSERVERS FROM ANOTHER JET; REFING AN AIR SHOW KIND OF EVENT; THAT I LATER LEARNED.
