Narrative:

On departure from teb on the teb 5 departure; at approximately 10 NM from pnj; we were cleared to climb from 3000 ft to 8000 ft. I spun the altitude select knob; and it went past 8000 ft to 10000 ft. Exactly at that moment the captain asked me to clear the direct line on the navigation display connecting pnj to our next waypoint. The reason was that after pnj; we were supposed to be on radar vectors on course. This distraction caused me to forget to spin the altitude select knob back to our cleared altitude of 8000 ft. It also caused the captain to forget to verify the altitude selected in the altitude window. We also were having trouble putting a discontinuity into the FMS flight plan after pnj; which increased the distraction. We went through 8000 ft; and the controller asked us what altitude we were going to. We realized our mistake; leveled off at 9200 ft; and started back down. The controller said to stay at 9200 ft. We were then cleared to 10000 ft. We asked if we had lost separation; and the controller said 'no.' the departure proceeded normally after that.

Title: A FLT CREW WAS ISSUED A CLB CLRNC ON THE TEB 5 DEP. THE PNF FAILED TO SET THE ALT SELECT PROPERLY; AND THE FLT CREW FAILED TO LEVEL AT THE CLRED ALT.

Narrative: ON DEP FROM TEB ON THE TEB 5 DEP; AT APPROX 10 NM FROM PNJ; WE WERE CLRED TO CLB FROM 3000 FT TO 8000 FT. I SPUN THE ALTITUDE SELECT KNOB; AND IT WENT PAST 8000 FT TO 10000 FT. EXACTLY AT THAT MOMENT THE CAPT ASKED ME TO CLR THE DIRECT LINE ON THE NAV DISPLAY CONNECTING PNJ TO OUR NEXT WAYPOINT. THE REASON WAS THAT AFTER PNJ; WE WERE SUPPOSED TO BE ON RADAR VECTORS ON COURSE. THIS DISTR CAUSED ME TO FORGET TO SPIN THE ALTITUDE SELECT KNOB BACK TO OUR CLRED ALTITUDE OF 8000 FT. IT ALSO CAUSED THE CAPT TO FORGET TO VERIFY THE ALTITUDE SELECTED IN THE ALTITUDE WINDOW. WE ALSO WERE HAVING TROUBLE PUTTING A DISCONTINUITY INTO THE FMS FLT PLAN AFTER PNJ; WHICH INCREASED THE DISTR. WE WENT THROUGH 8000 FT; AND THE CTLR ASKED US WHAT ALTITUDE WE WERE GOING TO. WE REALIZED OUR MISTAKE; LEVELED OFF AT 9200 FT; AND STARTED BACK DOWN. THE CTLR SAID TO STAY AT 9200 FT. WE WERE THEN CLRED TO 10000 FT. WE ASKED IF WE HAD LOST SEPARATION; AND THE CTLR SAID 'NO.' THE DEP PROCEEDED NORMALLY AFTER THAT.
