Narrative:
On our arrival; there were not many passenger service agents available (most were servicing a mainline flight at another gate). The flight attendant held passenger on board until a passenger service agent near the main cabin door said to release them. She then released the passenger; but the passenger service agent went back behind the wing to deal with bags; and did not remain with the passenger. The flight attendant stepped into the aircraft to get out of the way of the passenger; and couldn't see that the passenger service agent was no longer present. After the passenger got off; they headed for the nearest door that they could see instead of to the stairs to the jetway where they were supposed to go. I happened to be walking into operations at the time; so I was able to head them off and point them the right way. To prevent recurrence: hire enough people; or if that's not possible; have the passenger service agent tell the flight attendant to hold the passenger on board.

Title: CRJ200 CAPT REPORTS PAX WALKING TO WRONG DOOR TO TERMINAL AFTER GATE AGENT DOES NOT MONITOR THEIR PROGRESS FROM ACFT.
Narrative: ON OUR ARR; THERE WERE NOT MANY PAX SVC AGENTS AVAILABLE (MOST WERE SVCING A MAINLINE FLT AT ANOTHER GATE). THE FLT ATTENDANT HELD PAX ON BOARD UNTIL A PAX SVC AGENT NEAR THE MAIN CABIN DOOR SAID TO RELEASE THEM. SHE THEN RELEASED THE PAX; BUT THE PAX SVC AGENT WENT BACK BEHIND THE WING TO DEAL WITH BAGS; AND DID NOT REMAIN WITH THE PAX. THE FLT ATTENDANT STEPPED INTO THE ACFT TO GET OUT OF THE WAY OF THE PAX; AND COULDN'T SEE THAT THE PAX SVC AGENT WAS NO LONGER PRESENT. AFTER THE PAX GOT OFF; THEY HEADED FOR THE NEAREST DOOR THAT THEY COULD SEE INSTEAD OF TO THE STAIRS TO THE JETWAY WHERE THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO GO. I HAPPENED TO BE WALKING INTO OPS AT THE TIME; SO I WAS ABLE TO HEAD THEM OFF AND POINT THEM THE RIGHT WAY. TO PREVENT RECURRENCE: HIRE ENOUGH PEOPLE; OR IF THAT'S NOT POSSIBLE; HAVE THE PAX SVC AGENT TELL THE FLT ATTENDANT TO HOLD THE PAX ON BOARD.
