Narrative:
At top of alley holding short of nc awaiting taxi clearance we received an interphone call from mid cabin. The flight attendant told us a baggage cart was rolling towards us from the left side of the aircraft. We looked out our left window and saw a cargo bin on its cart rolling towards us. It apparently was left in the gate area and its brake must have released. There were no ground personnel in the gate area. We shut down the left engine as a precaution before the cart struck us. Impact of cart was on lower left forward fuselage and bin punctured a hole in aircraft skin. Aircraft was taken OTS and we proceeded on to ZZZZ on another aircraft.
