Narrative:
We were boarding at the gate. I was seated at the captain's seat checking the QRH for a routine matter when I noticed in peripheral vision that the jetway appeared to be moving. The movement stopped and when I realized that it was the airplane that had been moving; I set the parking brake which had been off. I checked with maintenance personnel and they told me that someone had removed the chocks without the tug and tow bar connected to the airplane and that the airplane had rolled. The belt loader that had been in the forward cargo hold had come in contact with the aircraft and stopped the rolling. Some paint had been chipped from the edge of the cargo door opening. Maintenance control was notified and action was taken. Aircraft was subsequently released for flight. Ground crew training. This could have been prevented had the tug been connected. Supplemental information from acn 791325: the parking brake was not on; due to the fact the brake temperatures were over 300 degrees.

MAINT CTL WAS NOTIFIED AND ACTION WAS TAKEN. ACFT WAS SUBSEQUENTLY RELEASED FOR FLT. GND CREW TRAINING. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED HAD THE TUG BEEN CONNECTED. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 791325: THE PARKING BRAKE WAS NOT ON; DUE TO THE FACT THE BRAKE TEMPS WERE OVER 300 DEGS.
