Narrative:
As we were being vectored for a visual approach we were given a TA. The traffic was supposed to be climbing to 3500 ft. We didn't have the traffic on TCAS or visually. We advised ATC we were looking. ATC called the traffic again and asked if we had the field. We stated that we had the field but not the traffic. ATC told us to maintain 4000 ft and turn towards the field. As we were turning ATC asked the VFR aircraft what his altitude was. We heard him say descending through 3900 ft. ATC told us to make an immediate left turn to 090 degree traffic at 1 O'clock position and less than a mi. The first officer started turning left but I felt we needed to climb also. I told ATC we were turning left and climbing. I took the controls and we made a steep left turn and hard climb. We leveled off at around 6000 ft and ATC began to re-vector us. We never got the traffic visually or on TCAS. We did have other aircraft on TCAS so we knew it ws working properly.

Title: AN EMB135 FLT CREW WAS ADVISED OF TRAFFIC THAT THEY NEVER SAW VISUALLY OR ON TCAS. THE CAPT ELECTED TO FLY AN EVASIVE MANEUVER.
Narrative: AS WE WERE BEING VECTORED FOR A VISUAL APCH WE WERE GIVEN A TA. THE TFC WAS SUPPOSED TO BE CLBING TO 3500 FT. WE DIDN'T HAVE THE TFC ON TCAS OR VISUALLY. WE ADVISED ATC WE WERE LOOKING. ATC CALLED THE TFC AGAIN AND ASKED IF WE HAD THE FIELD. WE STATED THAT WE HAD THE FIELD BUT NOT THE TFC. ATC TOLD US TO MAINTAIN 4000 FT AND TURN TOWARDS THE FIELD. AS WE WERE TURNING ATC ASKED THE VFR ACFT WHAT HIS ALT WAS. WE HEARD HIM SAY DSNDING THROUGH 3900 FT. ATC TOLD US TO MAKE AN IMMEDIATE L TURN TO 090 DEG TFC AT 1 O'CLOCK POS AND LESS THAN A MI. THE FO STARTED TURNING L BUT I FELT WE NEEDED TO CLB ALSO. I TOLD ATC WE WERE TURNING L AND CLBING. I TOOK THE CTLS AND WE MADE A STEEP L TURN AND HARD CLB. WE LEVELED OFF AT AROUND 6000 FT AND ATC BEGAN TO RE-VECTOR US. WE NEVER GOT THE TFC VISUALLY OR ON TCAS. WE DID HAVE OTHER ACFT ON TCAS SO WE KNEW IT WS WORKING PROPERLY.
