Narrative:

During rollout after a normal landing on runway 34; we received instructions from the control tower that were unintelligible because of noise in the cockpit while in reverse thrust and slowing down. I advised the tower the instructions were unreadable. We were then instructed to hold short of runway 2 while we were still rolling out on runway 34. About this time; I realized that the hold short line for runway 2 was actually located on runway 34 and a significant distance before the actual end of runway 34. I brought the airplane to a rather abrupt stop and ended up right on the hold short line for runway 2. There was no conflict with other aircraft. During landing on any runway; unless in a lahso situation; my expectation is that the entire runway is usable for landing and rollout. The confusing situation regarding the hold short line for runway 2/20 on runway 34 in ric should specifically be noted as a lahso because less than the full length of runway 34 is available for landing. Also; this should be specified before landing and not during the high workload time of the landing rollout.

Title: MLG AT RIC IS SURPRISED WHEN TOLD TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 02 DURING LNDG ROLL ON RWY 34. DISCOVERS HOLD SHORT LINE IS ON THE SURFACE OF HIS OWN RWY.

Narrative: DURING ROLLOUT AFTER A NORMAL LNDG ON RWY 34; WE RECEIVED INSTRUCTIONS FROM THE CTL TWR THAT WERE UNINTELLIGIBLE BECAUSE OF NOISE IN THE COCKPIT WHILE IN REVERSE THRUST AND SLOWING DOWN. I ADVISED THE TWR THE INSTRUCTIONS WERE UNREADABLE. WE WERE THEN INSTRUCTED TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 2 WHILE WE WERE STILL ROLLING OUT ON RWY 34. ABOUT THIS TIME; I REALIZED THAT THE HOLD SHORT LINE FOR RWY 2 WAS ACTUALLY LOCATED ON RWY 34 AND A SIGNIFICANT DISTANCE BEFORE THE ACTUAL END OF RWY 34. I BROUGHT THE AIRPLANE TO A RATHER ABRUPT STOP AND ENDED UP RIGHT ON THE HOLD SHORT LINE FOR RWY 2. THERE WAS NO CONFLICT WITH OTHER ACFT. DURING LNDG ON ANY RWY; UNLESS IN A LAHSO SITUATION; MY EXPECTATION IS THAT THE ENTIRE RWY IS USABLE FOR LNDG AND ROLLOUT. THE CONFUSING SITUATION REGARDING THE HOLD SHORT LINE FOR RWY 2/20 ON RWY 34 IN RIC SHOULD SPECIFICALLY BE NOTED AS A LAHSO BECAUSE LESS THAN THE FULL LENGTH OF RWY 34 IS AVAILABLE FOR LNDG. ALSO; THIS SHOULD BE SPECIFIED BEFORE LNDG AND NOT DURING THE HIGH WORKLOAD TIME OF THE LNDG ROLLOUT.
