Narrative:
We landed overweight. This was because of an engine anomaly at cruise that between dispatcher and myself a decision was made that the most prudent course of action to take was to return to ZZZ as a precautionary measure mainly because maintenance was uncomfortable with the circumstances of the anomaly. Since we were planning a flight to iad and this happened at the beginning of the flight (1 hour into it) this resulted in an overweight landing. All things considered I did not think it prudent to burn fuel off to landing weight and elected to land as stated. Supplemental information from acn 792891: approximately 10 mins after leveling off at FL350; the right engine EPR rolled back to approximately 1.0. After consulting with maintenance and dispatch we returned to ZZZ and landed approximately 2000 pounds overweight.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B757 FLT CREW REPORTS EPR FAILURE AT FL350 AND RETURN FOR OVER WEIGHT LANDING.
Narrative: WE LANDED OVERWT. THIS WAS BECAUSE OF AN ENG ANOMALY AT CRUISE THAT BTWN DISPATCHER AND MYSELF A DECISION WAS MADE THAT THE MOST PRUDENT COURSE OF ACTION TO TAKE WAS TO RETURN TO ZZZ AS A PRECAUTIONARY MEASURE MAINLY BECAUSE MAINT WAS UNCOMFORTABLE WITH THE CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE ANOMALY. SINCE WE WERE PLANNING A FLT TO IAD AND THIS HAPPENED AT THE BEGINNING OF THE FLT (1 HR INTO IT) THIS RESULTED IN AN OVERWT LNDG. ALL THINGS CONSIDERED I DID NOT THINK IT PRUDENT TO BURN FUEL OFF TO LNDG WT AND ELECTED TO LAND AS STATED. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 792891: APPROX 10 MINS AFTER LEVELING OFF AT FL350; THE R ENG EPR ROLLED BACK TO APPROX 1.0. AFTER CONSULTING WITH MAINT AND DISPATCH WE RETURNED TO ZZZ AND LANDED APPROX 2000 LBS OVERWT.
