Narrative:
During the evening of the event on an overnight; I received a call from my first officer stating he had received a call from the first officer to whom we xferred the aircraft. My first officer was advised tools had been discovered in the wheelwell during preflight. I had noted maintenance had been performed on a previous day and the aircraft had been flown by a crew prior to us. I assume we were the second crew to fly the aircraft with the tools in the wheelwell. The tools obviously were located in such a position not to be a problem during normal operations. As of this writing; I do not know the exact location of the tools; but suspect they were not in a location easily seen while performing a preflight. Maintenance should not have left the tools; but I did suggest to my first officer that using a flashlight; day or night; is good idea while checking the wheelwell. In addition to 'extra parts;' fluid leaks are easier to see.

Title: A B737 CAPT REPORTS HIS CREW FLEW AN ACFT THAT WAS LATER DISCOVERED TO HAVE TOOLS IN THE WHEEL WELL FROM MAINT PERFORMED THE PREVIOUS DAY.
Narrative: DURING THE EVENING OF THE EVENT ON AN OVERNIGHT; I RECEIVED A CALL FROM MY FO STATING HE HAD RECEIVED A CALL FROM THE FO TO WHOM WE XFERRED THE ACFT. MY FO WAS ADVISED TOOLS HAD BEEN DISCOVERED IN THE WHEELWELL DURING PREFLT. I HAD NOTED MAINT HAD BEEN PERFORMED ON A PREVIOUS DAY AND THE ACFT HAD BEEN FLOWN BY A CREW PRIOR TO US. I ASSUME WE WERE THE SECOND CREW TO FLY THE ACFT WITH THE TOOLS IN THE WHEELWELL. THE TOOLS OBVIOUSLY WERE LOCATED IN SUCH A POS NOT TO BE A PROB DURING NORMAL OPS. AS OF THIS WRITING; I DO NOT KNOW THE EXACT LOCATION OF THE TOOLS; BUT SUSPECT THEY WERE NOT IN A LOCATION EASILY SEEN WHILE PERFORMING A PREFLT. MAINT SHOULD NOT HAVE LEFT THE TOOLS; BUT I DID SUGGEST TO MY FO THAT USING A FLASHLIGHT; DAY OR NIGHT; IS GOOD IDEA WHILE CHKING THE WHEELWELL. IN ADDITION TO 'EXTRA PARTS;' FLUID LEAKS ARE EASIER TO SEE.
