Narrative:

Takeoff runway at ZZZ. First officer/oe student neglected to stabilize engines at 50%. Check airman intervened and stabilized engines. At approximately 95-100 KTS automatic callout 'retard; retard' was heard several times. Not knowing what phase of flight the aircraft was in; a reject was accomplished without incident. Maintenance was unable to explain the problem. After several tests; the write-up was signed off and the flight continued to ZZZ1 without incident. Cause: unknown. This has happened to me on oe's many times. We even practiced these in the simulator. (Ie; student doesn't stabilize at 50%); and I have never seen the aircraft change phases of flight or annunciate 'retard; retard.'
