Narrative:
Approximately 30 mins after takeoff flight attendant reported a mid-lavatory smoke alarm accompanied by smell of electrical smoke. A hint of the smell could be detected in the cockpit. Relief pilot had just started his break. Investigation yielded no source and the smell seemed to dissipate. The smoke alarm was disabled by flight attendants. Since we had 2 indicators suggesting that something might be burning; I thought it would be prudent to discontinue the flight and divert into ZZZ. Even though the smell had dissipated; an emergency was declared on 20 mi final due to planned overweight landing. Flight attendant did report the odor once again at that point; but what we smelled in the cockpit at that time seemed more like a dirty air conditioner sock. After landing; we had safety vehicles inspect us for heat sources and hot brakes; then taxied to a gate.

Title: B757-200 FLT CREW DIVERTS FOR OVERWEIGHT LANDING AFTER A MID CABIN LAV SMOKE ALARM ACTIVATES AND A HINT OF ELECTRICAL SMOKE COULD BE DETECTED IN THE COCKPIT.
Narrative: APPROX 30 MINS AFTER TKOF FLT ATTENDANT RPTED A MID-LAVATORY SMOKE ALARM ACCOMPANIED BY SMELL OF ELECTRICAL SMOKE. A HINT OF THE SMELL COULD BE DETECTED IN THE COCKPIT. RELIEF PLT HAD JUST STARTED HIS BREAK. INVESTIGATION YIELDED NO SOURCE AND THE SMELL SEEMED TO DISSIPATE. THE SMOKE ALARM WAS DISABLED BY FLT ATTENDANTS. SINCE WE HAD 2 INDICATORS SUGGESTING THAT SOMETHING MIGHT BE BURNING; I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE PRUDENT TO DISCONTINUE THE FLT AND DIVERT INTO ZZZ.
