Narrative:
We landed on runway 35 in to the airport; winds were reported calm; no other traffic was heard in the area. After a short break on the ramp we taxied out to runway 35 behind another departing aircraft. Windsock at this time showed a slight wind out of the south favoring runway 17. We decided to use runway 35 to not cause any confusion or conflict with the previously taxiing aircraft. The aircraft ahead of us taxied onto the runway and departed on a left downwind for runway 35. We made our position reports on the ground and proceeded to take off on runway 35. Shortly after applying takeoff power and reaching approximately 30-40 KIAS the aircraft on downwind reported to us that there is another aircraft departing on runway 17 directly at us. At that point we retarded the throttle and applied full braking. We saw out of the windscreen the other aircraft appearing over the slight in rise in the runway. An immediate u-turn was made and an 'expedited' taxi was made to the end of the runway where we could taxi off the runway. The other aircraft appeared to have seen us; slowed down and then continued his takeoff. After reviewing the event it didn't appear as though either pilot were in the wrong. Calm winds; uncontrolled field; no communications required. Diligence is needed when operating at all airfields especially uncontrolled.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: C182 AT A NON-TOWERED AIRPORT ATTEMPTS A DEPARTURE ON 35 WHILE TRAFFIC WAS UTILIZING 17; THE FAVORED RWY.
Narrative: WE LANDED ON RWY 35 IN TO THE ARPT; WINDS WERE RPTED CALM; NO OTHER TFC WAS HEARD IN THE AREA. AFTER A SHORT BREAK ON THE RAMP WE TAXIED OUT TO RWY 35 BEHIND ANOTHER DEPARTING ACFT. WINDSOCK AT THIS TIME SHOWED A SLIGHT WIND OUT OF THE S FAVORING RWY 17. WE DECIDED TO USE RWY 35 TO NOT CAUSE ANY CONFUSION OR CONFLICT WITH THE PREVIOUSLY TAXIING ACFT. THE ACFT AHEAD OF US TAXIED ONTO THE RWY AND DEPARTED ON A L DOWNWIND FOR RWY 35. WE MADE OUR POS RPTS ON THE GND AND PROCEEDED TO TAKE OFF ON RWY 35. SHORTLY AFTER APPLYING TKOF PWR AND REACHING APPROX 30-40 KIAS THE ACFT ON DOWNWIND RPTED TO US THAT THERE IS ANOTHER ACFT DEPARTING ON RWY 17 DIRECTLY AT US. AT THAT POINT WE RETARDED THE THROTTLE AND APPLIED FULL BRAKING. WE SAW OUT OF THE WINDSCREEN THE OTHER ACFT APPEARING OVER THE SLIGHT IN RISE IN THE RWY. AN IMMEDIATE U-TURN WAS MADE AND AN 'EXPEDITED' TAXI WAS MADE TO THE END OF THE RWY WHERE WE COULD TAXI OFF THE RWY. THE OTHER ACFT APPEARED TO HAVE SEEN US; SLOWED DOWN AND THEN CONTINUED HIS TKOF. AFTER REVIEWING THE EVENT IT DIDN'T APPEAR AS THOUGH EITHER PLT WERE IN THE WRONG. CALM WINDS; UNCTLED FIELD; NO COMS REQUIRED. DILIGENCE IS NEEDED WHEN OPERATING AT ALL AIRFIELDS ESPECIALLY UNCTLED.
