Narrative:
During the preflight the altitude alerter was set to 2000 ft. The departure required a level off at 1500 ft. The flying pilot realized the problem and leveled off around 1700 ft. When we checked in with departure control; they advised us that we were supposed to be at 1500 ft. This problem could have been avoided with a more thorough takeoff brief completed before we left the ramp.
