Narrative:
After takeoff; we received an EICAS message 'left generator drive.' we started the APU. I asked the first officer to take over flying duties. Myself and the relief pilot pulled out the checklist. As per the checklist we disconnected the left generator drive. The left generator is now inoperative for the rest of the flight. Climbing out; we contacted dispatch and talked to maintenance. After we made a decision to return; we dumped fuel at FL290 over the water off the coast. We dumped about 44000 pounds and landed overweight by about 5000 pounds.
