Narrative:
Cockpit air noise excessive. Missed numerous ATC calls en route. During descent into ZZZ air noise became so loud we were unable to understand ATC instructions. At 10000 ft using captain's authority/authorized I turned off left pack. At that point forward cockpit air noise was normal; made normal approach and landing. This aircraft in this condition is dangerous and needs to be taken OTS.

Narrative: COCKPIT AIR NOISE EXCESSIVE. MISSED NUMEROUS ATC CALLS ENRTE. DURING DSCNT INTO ZZZ AIR NOISE BECAME SO LOUD WE WERE UNABLE TO UNDERSTAND ATC INSTRUCTIONS. AT 10000 FT USING CAPT'S AUTH I TURNED OFF L PACK. AT THAT POINT FORWARD COCKPIT AIR NOISE WAS NORMAL; MADE NORMAL APCH AND LNDG. THIS ACFT IN THIS CONDITION IS DANGEROUS AND NEEDS TO BE TAKEN OTS.
