Narrative:

Upon descent into ZZZ; our #1 cylinder head temperature (cht) indication was 555 degrees fahrenheit; 55 degrees fahrenheit over the limit. We were given a descent from 7000 ft to 5000 ft and we then contacted our company operations to see what they suggested and possible troubleshooting with the maintenance department. ATC then gave us a turn to the northwest out over wooded areas. I decided that it would be best to stay along the coast; near available airports should the situation get worse. We relayed our situation to ATC who then asked what the nature of the emergency was and what they could do to help. We asked for a straight-in landing (winds were calm) and direct the field. As we continued the descent; the cylinder head temperature dropped 300 degrees fahrenheit and was normal again. The engine was smooth and the egt was fine as well. I made the decision to continue to ZZZ as everything appeared normal. ATC asked us fuel and souls on board. A normal landing was made with crash fire rescue equipment standing by.

Title: A C172'S CYLINDER HEAD TEMPERATURE (CHT) EXCEEDED 555 DEGS F. AN EMERGENCY WAS DECLARED BUT AS THE FLIGHT CONTINUED THE TEMPERATURE DROPPED TO 300 DEGS F AND THE FLIGHT LANDED AT ITS DESTINATION.

Narrative: UPON DSCNT INTO ZZZ; OUR #1 CYLINDER HEAD TEMP (CHT) INDICATION WAS 555 DEGS FAHRENHEIT; 55 DEGS FAHRENHEIT OVER THE LIMIT. WE WERE GIVEN A DSCNT FROM 7000 FT TO 5000 FT AND WE THEN CONTACTED OUR COMPANY OPS TO SEE WHAT THEY SUGGESTED AND POSSIBLE TROUBLESHOOTING WITH THE MAINT DEPT. ATC THEN GAVE US A TURN TO THE NW OUT OVER WOODED AREAS. I DECIDED THAT IT WOULD BE BEST TO STAY ALONG THE COAST; NEAR AVAILABLE ARPTS SHOULD THE SITUATION GET WORSE. WE RELAYED OUR SITUATION TO ATC WHO THEN ASKED WHAT THE NATURE OF THE EMER WAS AND WHAT THEY COULD DO TO HELP. WE ASKED FOR A STRAIGHT-IN LNDG (WINDS WERE CALM) AND DIRECT THE FIELD. AS WE CONTINUED THE DSCNT; THE CYLINDER HEAD TEMP DROPPED 300 DEGS FAHRENHEIT AND WAS NORMAL AGAIN. THE ENG WAS SMOOTH AND THE EGT WAS FINE AS WELL. I MADE THE DECISION TO CONTINUE TO ZZZ AS EVERYTHING APPEARED NORMAL. ATC ASKED US FUEL AND SOULS ON BOARD. A NORMAL LNDG WAS MADE WITH CFR STANDING BY.
