Narrative:
Departure delayed because of low ceilings and visibility at gsp. After there was an improving trend, we departed mob. Crew was tired because of long duty day. Upon arrival at gsp we were directed to hold as another aircraft was on approach. After 1 turn in the pattern we were clrd for an ILS 3 approach, G/south and localizer information appeared normal. However, after passing the outer compass locator, the localizer appeared to lose its sensitivity. A missed approach was executed to evaluate the problem. The first officer noted that the navigation/LORAN switch was inadvertently left in LORAN. Another approach was accomplished west/O further incident. Corrective actions: on previous aircraft LORAN would disengage when an ILS frequency was selected. Our aircraft is being changed so that it will do the same thing. Navigation/LORAN check to be added to checklist. It would help if approach control remained open at night to alert crew of localizer deviation. Add xchk of instruments to checklist.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CPR LTT MADE GO AROUND FROM OM AT THE START OF IAP ILS APCH BECAUSE THE FLT CREW COULD NOT RESOLVE A DISCREPANCY IN NAVIGATIONAL INSTRUMENT INDICATION AND ACFT POSITION.
Narrative: DEP DELAYED BECAUSE OF LOW CEILINGS AND VIS AT GSP. AFTER THERE WAS AN IMPROVING TREND, WE DEPARTED MOB. CREW WAS TIRED BECAUSE OF LONG DUTY DAY. UPON ARR AT GSP WE WERE DIRECTED TO HOLD AS ANOTHER ACFT WAS ON APCH. AFTER 1 TURN IN THE PATTERN WE WERE CLRD FOR AN ILS 3 APCH, G/S AND LOC INFO APPEARED NORMAL. HOWEVER, AFTER PASSING THE OUTER COMPASS LOCATOR, THE LOC APPEARED TO LOSE ITS SENSITIVITY. A MISSED APCH WAS EXECUTED TO EVALUATE THE PROB. THE F/O NOTED THAT THE NAV/LORAN SWITCH WAS INADVERTENTLY LEFT IN LORAN. ANOTHER APCH WAS ACCOMPLISHED W/O FURTHER INCIDENT. CORRECTIVE ACTIONS: ON PREVIOUS ACFT LORAN WOULD DISENGAGE WHEN AN ILS FREQ WAS SELECTED. OUR ACFT IS BEING CHANGED SO THAT IT WILL DO THE SAME THING. NAV/LORAN CHK TO BE ADDED TO CHKLIST. IT WOULD HELP IF APCH CTL REMAINED OPEN AT NIGHT TO ALERT CREW OF LOC DEV. ADD XCHK OF INSTRUMENTS TO CHKLIST.
