Narrative:
On final approach segment; when pilot flying called for 'gear down' final descent checklist; EICAS message 'gear unsafe' and annunciator light 'gear' was illuminated upon extension of landing gear. Initiated a go-around and went to irregular procedure. Declared an emergency. Followed flight manual irregular procedure. Landed uneventfully. Supplemental information from acn 818260: we initiated a go around; the captain declared an emergency; and we headed toward the VOR to work the problem. The captain followed the irregular procedures in the flight manual. Once completed; we headed back to the airport.

Title: A B757-200 flight crew experienced EICAS message GEAR UNSAFE on approach. They discontinued approach; declared an emergency; ran the procedure; and landed normally.
