Narrative:
We were descending into ind. I thought we were cleared to 11000'. The first officer had acknowledged to the center 17000' altitude and had set 17000' in the altitude preselect. However, he had failed to arm the autoleveling and oral warning system on our aircraft. Passing through 16200', the center asked us our altitude. At that time, I disengaged the autoplt and immediately returned to 17000' and advised center we had conflicting traffic in sight. In our normal operations, we always call out 1000' above or below our assigned altitude, but due to cockpit distrs for the first officer, and my thinking we were cleared to 11000', the assigned altitude was missed. Our flight department is now discussing what can be done to keep this type of incident from happening again, ie, when assigned an altitude, acknowledgement will be made to the center and to the PF the aircraft.

Title: LESS THAN STANDARD SEPARATION BETWEEN CORP JET AND ANOTHER ACFT AFTER CORP JET BUSTED ALT. PLT DEVIATION.
Narrative: WE WERE DSNDING INTO IND. I THOUGHT WE WERE CLRED TO 11000'. THE F/O HAD ACKNOWLEDGED TO THE CENTER 17000' ALT AND HAD SET 17000' IN THE ALT PRESELECT. HOWEVER, HE HAD FAILED TO ARM THE AUTOLEVELING AND ORAL WARNING SYS ON OUR ACFT. PASSING THROUGH 16200', THE CENTER ASKED US OUR ALT. AT THAT TIME, I DISENGAGED THE AUTOPLT AND IMMEDIATELY RETURNED TO 17000' AND ADVISED CENTER WE HAD CONFLICTING TFC IN SIGHT. IN OUR NORMAL OPS, WE ALWAYS CALL OUT 1000' ABOVE OR BELOW OUR ASSIGNED ALT, BUT DUE TO COCKPIT DISTRS FOR THE F/O, AND MY THINKING WE WERE CLRED TO 11000', THE ASSIGNED ALT WAS MISSED. OUR FLT DEPT IS NOW DISCUSSING WHAT CAN BE DONE TO KEEP THIS TYPE OF INCIDENT FROM HAPPENING AGAIN, IE, WHEN ASSIGNED AN ALT, ACKNOWLEDGEMENT WILL BE MADE TO THE CENTER AND TO THE PF THE ACFT.
