Narrative:
On climbout; APU fire warning/overheat warning light illuminated with associated bell. Climb was stopped; emergency was declared. Memory item is to pull handle (APU fire warning/overheat) start clock; if after 30 seconds light doesn't go out; turn either direction; hold for 1 second. After this was accomplished; and after another 45 seconds or so; the light went out and the temperature gauge for the APU confirmed that the temperature was reducing. Our procedure is then to do the QRH. This was accomplished. The first officer advised the flight attendant and ATC we diverted to ZZZ. Upon landing; the fire trucks confirmed no further visible issues. We then taxied to the FBO where our mechanic inspected the aircraft. All appropriate checks and paperwork were completed without further complications.
