Narrative:
Original departure clearance runway 8L departure heading 110 degrees climb and maintain 12000'. As we turned 90 degrees to runway 8L tower advised us inbound opp direction landing traffic and VFR traffic south of airport reclred (pom, pom) daggett transition right turn direct pom VOR altitude restrictions maintain 12000', cleared for takeoff. The first officer made the takeoff and I handled the radio. In between switching from tower to departure control to lax center and looking for VFR traffic I misread the crossing restriction at karyn intersection. Lax center called as we were going through about 7500' and asked us what our assigned altitude was. I answered 12000'. He informed us the crossing altitude at karyn intersection was 7000' or below. I asked if he wanted us back at 7000'. Center said, 'no maintain 12000'.' contributing factors: rush rush takeoff clearance, last minute departure routing change, ambiguous altitude restrictions (ie, right turn pom VOR altitude restrictions maintain 12000' cleared for takeoff), and my desire to accommodate ont tower that I clear the runway for the inbound opp direction landing traffic. In short, trying to make the system work! Supplemental information from acn 82398: at the hold line, tower gave us a new clearance for a departure with a right turn back west to pomona VOR with a daggett transition, maintain 12000', comply with altitude restrictions. In between switching radios from tower to departure to center and looking for traffic, a crossing restriction at karyn intersection was misread as at or above 7000'. Factors which I believe caused this situation were a rushed takeoff clearance with a last second departure route change. Supplemental information from acn 82755: my map light would not go to full white/bright for some reason so I asked the captain to read the text portion of the SID for details which he did, and said it was a right turn to pomona VOR and cross karyn intersection at or above 7000'. At that time la center informed us that the SID restr us to 7000' or below at karyn. Suggestions: when last minute changes to clrncs are given, as in this situation, maybe basic SID information, etc, should be given as well to help cut down confusion. In our case we hurried things up to help tower out of the opp traffic situation only to put ourselves into a problem later. Haste once again makes mistakes.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: LGT OVERSHOT CROSSING ALT AT KARYN INTERSECTION, MISREAD SID.
Narrative: ORIGINAL DEP CLRNC RWY 8L DEP HDG 110 DEGS CLB AND MAINTAIN 12000'. AS WE TURNED 90 DEGS TO RWY 8L TWR ADVISED US INBND OPP DIRECTION LNDG TFC AND VFR TFC S OF ARPT RECLRED (POM, POM) DAGGETT TRANSITION RIGHT TURN DIRECT POM VOR ALT RESTRICTIONS MAINTAIN 12000', CLRED FOR TKOF. THE F/O MADE THE TKOF AND I HANDLED THE RADIO. IN BTWN SWITCHING FROM TWR TO DEP CTL TO LAX CENTER AND LOOKING FOR VFR TFC I MISREAD THE XING RESTRICTION AT KARYN INTXN. LAX CENTER CALLED AS WE WERE GOING THROUGH ABOUT 7500' AND ASKED US WHAT OUR ASSIGNED ALT WAS. I ANSWERED 12000'. HE INFORMED US THE XING ALT AT KARYN INTXN WAS 7000' OR BELOW. I ASKED IF HE WANTED US BACK AT 7000'. CENTER SAID, 'NO MAINTAIN 12000'.' CONTRIBUTING FACTORS: RUSH RUSH TKOF CLRNC, LAST MINUTE DEP ROUTING CHANGE, AMBIGUOUS ALT RESTRICTIONS (IE, RIGHT TURN POM VOR ALT RESTRICTIONS MAINTAIN 12000' CLRED FOR TKOF), AND MY DESIRE TO ACCOMMODATE ONT TWR THAT I CLR THE RWY FOR THE INBND OPP DIRECTION LNDG TFC. IN SHORT, TRYING TO MAKE THE SYS WORK! SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 82398: AT THE HOLD LINE, TWR GAVE US A NEW CLRNC FOR A DEP WITH A RIGHT TURN BACK W TO POMONA VOR WITH A DAGGETT TRANSITION, MAINTAIN 12000', COMPLY WITH ALT RESTRICTIONS. IN BTWN SWITCHING RADIOS FROM TWR TO DEP TO CENTER AND LOOKING FOR TFC, A XING RESTRICTION AT KARYN INTXN WAS MISREAD AS AT OR ABOVE 7000'. FACTORS WHICH I BELIEVE CAUSED THIS SITUATION WERE A RUSHED TKOF CLRNC WITH A LAST SECOND DEP ROUTE CHANGE. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 82755: MY MAP LIGHT WOULD NOT GO TO FULL WHITE/BRIGHT FOR SOME REASON SO I ASKED THE CAPT TO READ THE TEXT PORTION OF THE SID FOR DETAILS WHICH HE DID, AND SAID IT WAS A RIGHT TURN TO POMONA VOR AND CROSS KARYN INTXN AT OR ABOVE 7000'. AT THAT TIME LA CENTER INFORMED US THAT THE SID RESTR US TO 7000' OR BELOW AT KARYN. SUGGESTIONS: WHEN LAST MINUTE CHANGES TO CLRNCS ARE GIVEN, AS IN THIS SITUATION, MAYBE BASIC SID INFO, ETC, SHOULD BE GIVEN AS WELL TO HELP CUT DOWN CONFUSION. IN OUR CASE WE HURRIED THINGS UP TO HELP TWR OUT OF THE OPP TFC SITUATION ONLY TO PUT OURSELVES INTO A PROB LATER. HASTE ONCE AGAIN MAKES MISTAKES.
