Narrative:
Light to mod chop and at same time was looking for traffic outside. All day long we had advisories of traffic everywhere and on the round-trip before we had a very close near miss (had to take evasive action to avoid the other aircraft. This happened near our approach to the killeen, tx airport). Therefore we were especially on guard for more traffic the rest of the day. These factors, plus the fact that both transponders would not transmit for approximately 5 minutes, worked with both trying to get them to work and eventually succeeded and was at altitude at time.
