Narrative:

I was enroute slowly (strong headwind which had decreased my ground speed to about 50 KTS) at 12;000 ft approximately 500 ft above the tops of the clouds when I encountered extreme mountain wave turbulence and possible convective turbulence and I became unable to maintain altitude; heading; or control for approximately 3 minutes. During which time altitude varied from 12;100 ft to 10;300 ft back to 12;000 ft and then back to 9;700 ft. I was vectored to the burbank ILS. Once clear of the turbulence; I asked and received a clearance back to ZZZ airport.
