Narrative:

We were enroute from pie to apf. We were cleared as filed (pie.ZEILR2). Once reaching zeilr intersection we proceeded direct to akuns as published on the STAR and what was shown on the FMS database. About 5 miles south of zeilr the controller asked what heading we were flying. I told him our heading and that we were direct to akuns. The controller responded by saying that that part of the arrival was unusable per NOTAM. He then gave us a 180 degree heading and shortly after handed us off to the next controller. I did read the notams before departure; but did not relate that particular NOTAM to our flight planned route. In order to prevent recurrence; I will read the notams more thoroughly and query the controllers or FSS for a better understanding of a NOTAM's meaning when I feel I may misinterpret it.
