Narrative:
Approximately 160 NM from ZZZ; I felt a bang followed by a low rumbling/vibration. Noticed right engine egt rising. Flying first officer retarded throttle as I pulled out the driftdown qrc. I declared an emergency with ATC and completed driftdown checklist. ATC advised 150 NM from ZZZ. Started driftdown and called for captain's return to cockpit. There was an oil burning odor and as we were preparing for the engine shutdown checklist; the purser advised cabin filling with smoke. We completed the smoke/fumes removal checklist which cleared the cabin. Advised dispatch of situation and diversion via ACARS. Received landing data from dispatch and ACARS and verified it with flight manual. Received weather from ACARS and ATC. Briefed approach. Advised purser and passenger situation under control and diversion to ZZZ. Normal southeast approach and landing accomplished by captain.
