Climbing out of ZZZ enroute to ZZZ1. Frequency change with numerous calls to ATC that were unanswered. Needed to deviate left or right for weather. By the time ATC answered; we could then only deviate to the right. ATC said unable right; declared emergency and deviated to the right. FL220 climbing FL270. Clear of weather -- canceled emergency -- rejoined route.
