Narrative:
On takeoff and after gear retraction we got an ECAM. The ECAM initially stated to recycle the gear because the gear doors did not close. Then the next ECAM directed us to turn off the ptu and green system hydraulic pump before we were able to do the first ECAM. We cleaned up the aircraft and asked to stay below 250 KTS per the ECAM. We then asked for holding to figure out what had exactly happened. Once we realized we had lost our green system we declared an emergency and held so we could formulate our plan and coordinate with flight attendants; passengers; maintenance; dispatch and ATC. After we ran all the ecams and appropriate checklists we returned to the departure airport; landed without incident and were towed to the gate.
