Narrative:

We had arrived in clt; and assigned a gate. We called the ramp as we were passing spot X on the main ramp. Ramp cleared us to the gate. Aircraft 2 was on taxiway C and called ramp as they were crossing taxiway M; stating they were at spot Y for clearance to their gate. Ramp cleared them in as well; apparently assuming they were actually at spot Y and therefore north of our position as we were taxiing. The aircraft 2 crew was taxiing at an abnormally high speed; overtaking us on C as we entered the ramp at spot Y without slowing. We were nearly at spot Y on our way to the gate at that point when we realized aircraft 2 was not going to stop before making the left turn to enter the ramp; so I brought the plane to a stop. We estimate their left wingtip missed us by 30 feet; possibly less. Aircraft 2 came to a stop on the ramp taxiway abeam the gate and asked 'what happened?' over the ramp frequency. The ramp controller said he'd thought aircraft 2 was further north of us so wouldn't be a factor and didn't realize we were both headed to be at spot Y at roughly the same time. The event occurred most likely due to a lack of awareness of the two aircraft on the ramp controller's part as well as a lack of awareness on the aircraft 2's crew part for making a left turn directly in front of another aircraft while taxiing as fast as they were at the time. Lack of vision for the ramp controller and the capability of the camera system was possibly a big factor.
