Narrative:
At approximately XA45 while working the gadston sector at atl center; I switched an aircraft to the caladonia sector at mem center. I thought the aircraft was in radar contact with that sector but automation had automatically handed off the aircraft to columbus approach; which is several sectors away.

Title: ZTL Controller described operational deviation when aircraft was directed to wrong sector/facility resulting in an unauthorized airspace entry.
Narrative: At approximately XA45 while working the Gadston sector at ATL Center; I switched an aircraft to the Caladonia sector at MEM Center. I thought the aircraft was in radar contact with that sector but automation had automatically handed off the aircraft to Columbus Approach; which is several sectors away.
