Narrative:

After reviewing general procedures manual (gpm); 'definition of inspection terms as used in xx carrier's manuals and work cards;' it is clear that the terms and definitions detailed in this section do not match the terminology used in existing work cards and possibly other manual references. For example; the work card for B767 ETOPS-1; step 8; calls for a 'general walk around check.' step 10 and 'a' and 'B'; calls for 'ground level visual check' and 'from the ground; visual check...' work card B767 ETOPS-2; step 2; is another example of the inconsistent use of the check terminology when it states; 'perform a general walk around of the aircraft from the ground...' these are all variations of the check terminology called out and clearly defined in gpm. The maintenance work cards are not created using a standard 'format' to ensure consistent use of terminology that matches gpm or other manual guidance. If the gpm states and defines proper terminology; then the work cards need to be revised so that the approval terminology for the appropriate maintenance activity is consistent.
