Narrative:

This aircraft left with the floor sidewall vent panel not in place. I received a message from maintenance control; that some vent panels needed to be reattached at row 21F. When I got to the gate; the aircraft had departed with the sidewall vent panel not attached. This is not only a safety of flight item; but it (vent panel) is also not allowed to be missing or not attached; per the MEL. Both the maintenance controller and the cabin coordinator were aware of this defect when the aircraft departed.

Title: A Line Mechanic reports that one of their B737-800's was dispatched with a known cabin floor sidewall vent panel(Air Grille) not secured in place. Maintenance Control was aware of the situation; because Control had called him out to the gate to reinstall the vent panel but the aircraft had departed. The MEL does not allow Release of aircraft if a Air Grille is missing or not secured.
