Narrative:
Catering had finished loading galleys; and cleaners had just left aircraft. Purser noticed burning smell in forward galley area. After searching ovens and other areas; she discovered cleaners had placed plastic cup filled with paper trash left on the coffee maker; with heater on. Plastic cup had melted through; and paper napkins inside were burning. We were able to remove material and clean element; but flight attendant's noted this was not the first time cleaners have had debris left on coffee maker (placed there to clear the counter for cleaning). Left unattended; this could have started a significant fire. Cleaners should be notified of this hazard!!! We left the burned debris with agent at gate; due to plastic burning smell.
