Narrative:
A short time into flight; the engine sounded as if sputtering. Captain called to advise that there were problems with the engine and that he was going to turn off the engine and land somewhere other than our destination. Captain advised and I verified that it was an intermediate emergency level and asked how long until landing. I followed intermediate level emergency procedures. Captain called again and indicated that we may be landing in ZZZ. I prepped passengers for planned emergency. Part of intermediate level announcement includes advising passengers that landing will be normal; when captain made an announcement shortly before landing; he advised passengers that landing was other than normal. Some passengers; who were already fearful; reacted and I had to reassure them. Other than this; captain's notifications to flight attendants and passengers were excellent.
