Narrative:
I was on a VFR cross-country training flight. Upon arrival at our destination; the airport manager informed my instructor and me that philadelphia approach had called and asked to speak to us. My instructor called philadelphia approach and spoke with their supervisor who informed him that our altitude was reported at 4000ft MSL and that we had gone through philadelphia's class B airspace; although we were level at 1500ft MSL below the class B airspace. The following day; the aircraft was taken for pitot static altimeter and transponder check and several bad connections were found at the back of the encoder; causing various readings on our altitude. The connections were fixed; and the aircraft had a second pitot static check and was found in compliance.

Title: Student and Instructor pilots aboard a Cessna 172 are cited for entering the Philadelphia Class B although they were below the area at all times on their cross country. Maintenance later determined the pitot static system was malfunctioning.
