Narrative:
We were making practice autorotations to runway 12 at cos. We were advised that we were cleared to land; base our discretion runway 12. We were advised that a cessna would be departing also; but ATC did not advise that they were number 1 or what order. We were also under the impression that they would be taking off runway 17R and would not be a factor as long as we kept our base in tight. ATC did not advise that we were cleared to land number 2; that the airplane would be departing ahead of us or that we were to be following the airplane traffic. Normally if ATC clears two aircraft for the same runway; they have advised what order they are to take off/land in. We had the airplane in sight west of runway 17R; so we made a short approach to 12 to stay out of the airplane's way (base our discretion). ATC was not clear on what order we were to take the runway and we may have been mistaken on which runway they told us the airplane was going to take off on.
