Narrative:
On descent through approximately fl 180; I noticed left hyd qty EICAS message. Initial quantity reading was .47. Checklist was followed and left hydraulic system pumps were shut off to conserve fluid. Lowered gear early about 12 miles out on final to see if gear would extend. Gear extended normally and visual approach to normal landing was accomplished. All checklists were accomplished by the first officer including a review of affected items. Upon arrival at the gate; the left system quantity read .38. Crew coordination throughout the event was excellent. Plenty of time was allowed to accomplished all required checklist items.
