Narrative:
Near miss on takeoff. Gso tower cleared us into position on runway 23 and said to be ready for immediate takeoff--an air carrier jet on final. Tower then cleared us for takeoff with no other comments about traffic. The following summary occurred very rapidly, therefore distances and altitudes are approximate. At just about rotation speed I saw a small aircraft (single engine, high wing, yellow/orange color) converging from the left at low altitude on what appeared to be a collision course. I delayed rotation to avoid pulling up into his path. At about the same moment small aircraft Y banked 90 degrees to the right and passed us on our left side at what appeared to be less than 500' horizontal and at an altitude of 100-200' AGL. I then rotated and continued normal takeoff/climb. Near miss report filed with ATC.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: LESS THAN STANDARD SEPARATION AND NMAC BETWEEN ACR AND SMA. OPERATIONAL ERROR.
Narrative: NEAR MISS ON TKOF. GSO TWR CLRED US INTO POS ON RWY 23 AND SAID TO BE READY FOR IMMEDIATE TKOF--AN ACR JET ON FINAL. TWR THEN CLRED US FOR TKOF WITH NO OTHER COMMENTS ABOUT TFC. THE FOLLOWING SUMMARY OCCURRED VERY RAPIDLY, THEREFORE DISTANCES AND ALTS ARE APPROXIMATE. AT JUST ABOUT ROTATION SPD I SAW A SMA (SINGLE ENG, HIGH WING, YELLOW/ORANGE COLOR) CONVERGING FROM THE LEFT AT LOW ALT ON WHAT APPEARED TO BE A COLLISION COURSE. I DELAYED ROTATION TO AVOID PULLING UP INTO HIS PATH. AT ABOUT THE SAME MOMENT SMA Y BANKED 90 DEGS TO THE RIGHT AND PASSED US ON OUR LEFT SIDE AT WHAT APPEARED TO BE LESS THAN 500' HORIZ AND AT AN ALT OF 100-200' AGL. I THEN ROTATED AND CONTINUED NORMAL TKOF/CLB. NEAR MISS RPT FILED WITH ATC.
