Narrative:

When I arrived at the aircraft an nef (not essential for flight) item was being added by maintenance for the window shades. Just then the captain arrived with release which had been printed before nef item was added. The captain called dispatch to discuss the added nef. Dispatcher told the captain we were ok to depart with an nef. Arrived at destination. Release from there back to ord included the nef. The captain advised me that the dispatcher said we were ok to depart. It is unclear if nef items are required to be listed on release. Apparently some are on release and some are not. There needs to be clarification on what deferred items need to be listed on the release and which ones do not.
