Narrative:
The coded taxi system is unsafe and is against all other wisdom and normal procedures for safe operation or aircraft. All instructions for taxi require a read back verbatim but somehow we ignore this and use small print boxes with no verification of accepted taxi instructions. Add to this mix; not frequenting dfw; it is unsafe and not wise to first stop the aircraft; read the instructions; verify the procedure with the other pilot and then proceeded. Since this is what happens in all verbally given taxi instructions it seems we lie to ourselves on this poorly implemented system. Then add further coded instructions while on a taxiway; ie runway 36R full length; again heads go down; near other aircraft and we think this is safe. I will stop the aircraft; verify with the first officer that what we just acknowledged will be complied with.
