Narrative:
As pilot not flying; I asked ATC for direct ric. The controller replied; 'proceed direct richmond.' I repeated the clearance to ATC. A while later the same controller told us that we were north of course and I told him/her we were going direct to ric like he/she had cleared us. The controller said he/she didn't clear us direct ric. Both the first officer and I heard the clearance and I had repeated it back. ATC should have noted the route change that she had issued.
