Narrative:
As I turned right the aircraft did not respond normally to my inputs to the tiller. I immediately stopped and set the parking brake. The ECAM master caution illuminated and ECAM showed wheel north/west strg fault. My first officer said he also saw status memo northwest strg disc (in amber). We advised ground control; flight attendants and passengers. We complied with the QRH and called maintenance control on my cell phone. We returned to the gate and met the contract mechanic. Airbus should re-engineer and re-certify the nose wheel steering system to provide compliance with far certification standards.
