Narrative:
Upon level off; the right engine amber reverser indication appeared on EICAS screen. Quick reference handbook (QRH) procedure completed; an emergency was declared; and safe return to our departure airport accomplished. The rev indication remained on for approximately 10 minutes; then went out. EICAS indication returned upon landing and did not extinguish. We cleared the runway; stopped the aircraft and the airport rescue and fire fighting (arff) personnel inspected right engine and reported nothing unusual. Right engine was then shut down after appropriate cool down time. After gate arrival; maintenance reported 'sync lock' failure on right engine.
