Narrative:

Cleared by cpdlc (controller pilot data link communications) to climb to FL380 (max altitude in FMS was FL410). Upon reaching FL380 and deviating for weather in turbulence the aircraft was unable to remain above the lowest selectable airspeed (amber hook) with throttles full forward. Started a 200-300 FPM rate of descent. Eventually needed about 800 FPM rate of descent until about FL376 at which time we were able to climb back to FL380. Initial clearance required us to be at FL380 prior to XA44Z. We were back at the altitude by XA41Z. Reported level again by cpdlc.

Title: B777 Captain experienced inability to maintain FL380 in Western Atlantic airspace and descended 400 FT before aircraft was again able to maintain FL380. Reporter was deviating to avoid convective weather at the time.
